Biography
Hello, I am Dr. Dan Barrett. I am currently a Grief Counselor at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center. I am from the Buffalo, NY area and hold an earned PhD in Psychology. I retired from the Buffalo Police Department, with 29 years of service, as a Detective Sergeant. I have been teaching online and classroom courses at Bryant & Stratton College (Psychology, Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Computing Skills) since January 2011.
My research interests include reducing the risk of developing complicated grief in cancer patient caregivers through early group support, law enforcement suicide, and the impact of grief from critical incidents on first responders.
I am an annual reviewer of research submissions to the American Psychological Association International Convention (Division 15/Educational Psychology) and a past staff peer reviewer for the Journal of Societal and Cultural Research. I hold memberships in the American Psychological Association, Association for Death Education and Counseling, and Public Safety Peer Support Association.
I have presented at numerous psychological and law enforcement-focused conferences and seminars, am a past coordinator of the Western New York Law Enforcement Helpline and Erie County Suicide Fatality Review Board team member. I continue to provide services of Grief Counseling, Suicide/Crisis Intervention and Stress Management for law enforcement and all first responders and their families, consult on officer wellness, and am a registered consultant of the US Department of Justice Office for Victims of Crime.
