Referral Information

The last thing your patients want to hear is that they have a diagnosis of cancer. However, when you refer a patient to RPCI, you can do so with the utmost confidence that you have made the best decision for your patient.

You have ensured that he or she will receive confidential, competent care and treatment, and will be made to feel welcome and secure.

At RPCI, a new patient may be seen by several doctors from different oncology specialties. The medical team then confers to recommend a treatment plan. This multidisciplinary team will typically include a surgical oncologist, a medical oncologist, a radiation oncologist, a radiologist, a pathologist as well as nurses, occupational and physical therapists, and in some cases a psychologist.

As a referring physician, our medical team will make every effort to keep you fully informed and up-to-date on treatments, procedures and other relevant information that pertains to your patient. When your patient is returned to your care, you will be current on his or her status and further treatment requirements. Our medical team is a source of hope, encouragement and information for all of our patients, and we encourage the team concept of recovery among our staff, our patients, patients’ family members and friends and you, the primary care physician.

Patient Consultation - Second Opinion

Roswell Park specialists are available to offer a second opinion for one of your patients.  If you would like to have a conversation with them, please contact them through the referral office at 1-800-ROSWELL (1-800-767-9355) and leave a message for the specialist you are seeking.

Since our physicians are categorized in most health insurance provider manuals as sub-specialists, you may not be aware whether your patient’s health insurance company will authorize treatment at RPCI. RPCI and its practice plan have contracts in place with the major insurance companies locally, regionally and nationally. We will work with you and your patient and/or the insurance company to acquire the proper authorization. Call 1-800-ROSWELL (1-800-767-9355) and our referral professionals will help you.

Referral Process

Even with a suspicion of cancer your patient, or your office staff can call RPCI at 1-800 ROSWELL (1-800-767-9355) and one of our referral professionals will walk him or her through the referral process, answer questions and set up an appointment with the cancer specialist best suited to discuss his or her care.

If your patient makes the call directly, our referral professionals will contact you for the appropriate authorization, which is required if your patient participates in a managed care plan.
