Notice of Change Healthcare Cybersecurity Attack

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and Roswell Park Care Network were recently notified of a cybersecurity issue involving a vendor, UnitedHealth Group’s Change Healthcare — a healthcare technology company that provides revenue and payment tools. While efforts continue at a national level to address this incident, we are contacting you to make you aware of payment issues affecting some services provided at Roswell Park.

RPCI Clinical Practice Plan billing: If you received a Roswell Park bill before Feb. 21, 2024, payable to “RPCI Clinical Practice Plan" (see lower portion of bill) and have not yet paid, the system is out of service until further notice and we are unable to process your payment at this time. There will be no penalty or referral to a collection agency for late payments under this plan. Bills for ongoing appointments and clinic visits will not be issued for the short term. Patients will be instructed accordingly on how to make payments for these services once systems are operational again.

IMPORTANT: Outside of billing for those services, all other hospital service billings related to Roswell Park remain unaffected, and payment of all other hospital bills can continue as normal.

What happened?

Change Healthcare notified Roswell Park on Thursday, February 22, 2024 that it experienced a cybersecurity issue by an unauthorized person, and that its experts are working to address the matter. It is believed that the issue is specific to Change Healthcare.

What we are doing

Our Information Technology & Security teams have disabled Change Healthcare affiliated products as a preventive measure to protect our patients and billing processes. We continue to monitor our systems – no issues of concern have been uncovered.

What can you do?

Although no reports of financial information were involved in the breach, it is always recommended that you review your healthcare account statements regularly for suspicious activity and identify any issues. Please be aware of potential delays in prescription orders if you use any local retail pharmacies.
