BMT Research Program

Research is a key component of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Program at Roswell Park.  The Transplant Program clinicians and researchers are actively working to discover new treatments and techniques to enhance patient outcomes and quality of life.

Because the search for effective cancer treatments begins in the laboratory, there are several investigators working on new and innovative studies dealing with various aspects of blood and marrow transplantation research.

Some of the current laboratory research studies include:

  • HLA histocompatibility antigens and patient outcomes
  • Selective T cell depletion to decrease GvHD and preserve graft-versus-malignancy (GvM)
  • Development of a mouse model of blood and marrow transplantation for testing new agents to improve BMT outcomes
  • Cytokine, chemotherapy metabolism, and oxidative/reduction enzyme single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and transplant outcomes

No matter how promising a treatment appears in the laboratory, scientists are unable to predict exactly how effective and safe an innovation will be unless it is evaluated in patients. The Transplant Program offers a multitude of clinical research studies you may be asked to participate in to evaluate a new treatment option and or allow the BMT program to track patient outcomes.  Participation in clinical research studies is sometimes the only way to receive the benefits of recent innovations in treatments and very important for the advancement of cancer research.

The Roswell Park Transplant Program also has a robust Transplant Program Database, which has collected data on over 1200 tranplants for over 1000 patients. This database enhances the ongoing development of new clinical research studies and allows the team to better manage the ongoing care for transplant survivors.  The research staff is able to utilize the data organized in the database to conduct clinical research studies. Some of the clinical research studies that are being conducted using the Transplant Program Database are:

  • Identifying risk factors for acute GVHD
  • Analyzing the safety and efficacy of a unique conditioning regimen for Hodgkin dsease patients
  • Long-term effects of transplant such as osteoporosis, dental problems, secondary malignancies and cardiopulmonary disease
  • Pain management and palliative care issues
