A Survivor Speaks...
Buffalo, New York

I am proud to say to say that I am a colon cancer survivor.

Before I was diagnosed with having colon cancer, I didn’t know that even though colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable types of cancer, it is still the third-leading cause of cancer death in the United States, claiming more than 50,000 deaths each year.

I wasn’t aware that being African-American and over the age of 50 were two of the biggest factors that put me at an increased risk for colon cancer.

Now I know….and now YOU know too!

I tell my friends not to be afraid in getting early detection screenings.  The Office of Cancer Health Disparities offers free colorectal cancer awareness presentations. Knowledge is power!
