This drug treats advanced kidney (renal cell) cancer.
How Does This Drug Work?
Cancers are diseases in which abnormal cells reproduce uncontrollably. Pazopanib is a type of targeted therapy, not a traditional chemo (chemotherapy) agent. Traditional chemo agents attack cells that are reproducing rapidly. While cancer cells reproduce rapidly, so do some of the normal cells in your body such as the lining of your digestive tract.
Pazopanib is a tyrosine kinase inhibitor, and it works differently. It locates and targets several proteins (tyrosine kinases) on the surface of the cancer cells and some targets inside the cancer cells. It is thought that some of these targets play a role in the tumor’s ability to build new blood vessels, which it needs to grow. By blocking these targets, the tumor cannot build the new blood vessels. Cancer cells are starved, and the tumor shrinks.
