How is it Administered?
Your medicine will be given intravenously, which means it will be given through a tube placed in a vein, usually in your arm, wrist, hand or chest. Melphalan may also be taken orally as a tablet.
What is it Used For?
Melphalan belongs to the group of medicines called alkylating agents. It is used to treat cancer of the ovaries and a certain type of cancer in the bone marrow. Melphalan may also be used to treat breast cancer, certain types of cancers of the blood or lymph, endometrial cancer and malignant melanoma.
How Does it Work?
Melphalan works by interfering with the enzymes responsible for DNA replication and growth and causes cell death. This drug targets the cell cycle of all cells, and its effects are seen on both cancer and normal cells in the body.
