Our Psychosocial Oncology Staff consists of social workers, psychologists and support staff to support you during your cancer journey. ;

 

Senior secretarial staff may be the first people you encounter when contacting our department. Our secretaries can support you by providing basic information regarding community resources, (e.g. American Cancer Society, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, Social Security Disability, etc.). They are also available to assist patients and families with lodging arrangements and information on transportation, as well as scheduling appointments for you to meet with a social worker or psychologist. Experts in networking, education, advocacy, research, and resource development, oncology social workers provide a variety of psychosocial interventions that enhance quality of life and survivorship of persons with cancer and their families. These services are designed to assist groups and communities as well as individuals through counseling, stress and symptom management, care planning, navigation, education and advocacy.

LCSW/LMSW staff offer the following services: psychosocial assessment, counseling, distress management, linkage to community resources, assist in coping with your diagnosis and lifestyle adjustments related to your diagnosis, assistance with advanced care planning, facilitating communication between you and your medical team, and consulting with other staff to , identify and work within the social, emotional and economic factors related to the patient’s health situation. Social work staff are knowledgeable about challenges you may face and resources available to assist you. Social workers may meet with patients as part of a routine assessment during your clinic visit or inpatient stay. Baccalaureate prepared Social Work Staff (BSW) provide consultation and information and referral to a wide variety of community resources designed to address legal, financial and practical needs. Social Work staff also assists patients and families in making the transition from the hospital to other levels of care including skilled nursing facilities, sub-acute, rehabilitation, assisted living or long term care.

Medical Psychologists work with specialty programs such as survivorship, and assist in bridging the transition from community to hospital and back for patients and families with challenging mental health issues. Working with your Roswell Park treatment team, they facilitate communication with community providers and ensure appropriate linkage and treatment.
