How is it Administered?

Exemestane is comes as a tablet. It is usually taken once a day, after you have had a meal.

What is it Used For?

Exemestane is used to treat early stage breast cancer in women who are postmenopausal (have not had a menstrual period for 1 year) and who have already been treated with tamoxifen (Nolvadex®) for 2-3 years. It is also used to treat women whose breast cancer worsened while they were taking tamoxifen.

How does Exemestane Work?

Exemestane is in a class of medications called aromatase inhibitors, a type of hormone therapy. It stops an enzyme (aromatase) from changing hormones made by the adrenal glands (androgens) into the hormone estrogen. In postmenopausal women, this is the primary source of estrogen. When aromatase is blocked, estrogen levels go down. If the breast cancer is a type that grows when estrogen is present, then less estrogen may cause tumor growth to slow or stop.
