Neoral ®, Sandimmune®, SangCya®, Restasis ®, (There may be other brand names of this medication.)
How is it Administered?
Cyclosporine is available as an injection and a capsule or liquid to take by mouth. The injection; or as liquid eye drops.
What is it Used For?
Cyclosporine is used with other medications to prevent the rejection of a transplanted organ. The injections should only be used until the oral medication can be taken. The eye drops (Restatsis®) are used to increase tear production in people who have a chronic dry eye problem.
How Does it Work?
Cyclosporine is an immunosuppressive agent, which means it suppresses your body’s immune system. This is helpful if you have had a transplant and are trying to prevent rejection of the new organ. The problem is that it also decreases your body’s ability to fight off any type of infectious agent, which makes you more vulnerable to getting sick.
