BUFFALO, N.Y. — Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center President and CEO Candace S. Johnson, PhD, has completed her core leadership team with the appointment of Shirley A. Johnson, RN, MS, MBA, as Senior Vice President of Nursing and Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer. Ms. Johnson will join the Roswell Park staff on Oct. 31, 2016 with nearly 25 years’ experience in oncology nursing and nursing administration, and with four decades of service as a registered nurse.

“As Chief Nursing Officer, Shirley will be a critical member of our senior leadership team whose voice and vision will help to shape every element of Roswell Park’s patient services, from prevention through screening, treatment and survivor support,” says Dr. Johnson. “While I’m impressed by her accomplishments as a nursing leader and program administrator, what I most appreciate is the breadth of her contributions across every key area of oncology practice today — patient-centered care, process optimization, quality assessment, strategic planning, education and research.”

Ms. Johnson was most recently Senior Vice President and Chief Nursing and Patient Care Services Officer at City of Hope, a comprehensive cancer center in southern California, where she managed a team of more than 1,200 care providers working in areas such as nursing, perioperative surgery, case management, rehabilitation services, clinical nutrition, cardiology, pulmonology, inpatient care and ambulatory services. She joined City of Hope in 2008 as Vice President, Chief Nurse and Patient Care Services Officer. Her prior experience includes 10 years as Executive Director of the Siteman Cancer Center at Barnes-Jewish Hospital/Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Mo., where she helped drive the center’s successful bid for designation as a National Cancer Institute Comprehensive Cancer Center.

A two-time past President of the Association of Cancer Executives, Ms. Johnson earned her MBA, an MS degree in management and a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Maryville University in St. Louis. A current member of the American Society of Blood and Marrow Transplantation, she is also certified in Lean Six Sigma project development.

Ms. Johnson has been recognized with the American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer Award for Distinguished Service, in 2006, and the California State Legislature 2013 Woman of the Year distinction.
