Roswell Park Surgeons Compile New Anthology on Surgery for Stomach, Esophageal Cancers

Springer publication highlights several minimally invasive approaches, includes video demonstrations

BUFFALO, N.Y. — Two Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (Roswell Park) surgeons have produced a new, comprehensive guide on minimally invasive surgical approaches for treating cancers of the stomach and esophagus. Published by Springer, the anthology, “Minimally Invasive Foregut Surgery for Malignancy: Principles and Practice,” was edited by Steven Hochwald, MD, FACS, Chief of Gastrointestinal Surgery and Vice Chair of the Department of Surgical Oncology, and Moshim Kukar, MD, a newly appointed faculty member in the Roswell Park Department of Surgical Oncology.

Intended as a resource for practicing oncologic surgeons, fellows in surgical subspecialty training and surgical residents, “Minimally Invasive Foregut Surgery for Malignancy” provides an in-depth review of all surgical aspects of oncologic diseases involving the stomach and esophagus, with a focus on minimally invasive techniques, and best practices for minimizing and managing surgical complications. The text includes background information chapters and technique chapters, and also directs readers to online videos and/or animations for each surgical procedure discussed in the book.

In addition to serving as editors of the anthology, Drs. Hochwald and Kukar also wrote one of the book’s 25 chapters, “Laparoscopic and Thoracoscopic Transhiatal Esophagectomy with Cervical Anastomosis,” and contributed several videos.

“The book covers everything from benign and premalignant lesions to invasive cancer, with detailed guidance for clinicians regarding preoperative evaluation, surgical practice and post-surgical care. It’s a resource that’s both comprehensive and detailed, with videos and animations to reinforce the practical guidance that our talented authors shared,” notes Dr. Hochwald.

Several prominent physicians contributed chapters to the book, including Roswell Park faculty members Todd Demmy, MD, FACS, Clinical Chair of the Department of Thoracic Surgery; Usha Malhotra, MD, of the Department of Medicine; and Charles LeVea, MD, PhD, Director of Surgical Pathology.
