Roswell Park Scientist Featured Speaker at Capitol Briefing

The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR) is hosting a capitol briefing titled “Electronic Cigarettes: What You Don’t Know Can Hurt You” in room H-137, U.S. Capitol, Washington, DC on Thursday, May 14 from Noon to 1 p.m. The event is being hosted in collaboration with Representative Jackie Speier (CA) and Senator Richard Blumenthal (CT). Maciej Goniewicz, PhD, PHarmD, Assistant Professor of Oncology, Department of Health Behavior at Roswell Park is a featured panelist.

The event will offer insights regarding the complex regulatory issues and public health concerns surrounding electronic cigarettes. The briefing is designed to educate about the various types of electronic cigarettes, what we know and what we still need to know to protect public health. Dr. Goniewicz will review the available types of electronic cigarettes, current research regarding the safety and efficacy of the devices, and provide pharmacological and toxicological assessments.

Dr. Goniewicz is an expert in both clinical and community-based tobacco control research. His current research is focused on electronic nicotine delivery devices (e-cigarettes) and alternative forms of tobacco. He examines the safety and efficacy of these products. He also examines the implementation of new tobacco control laws and role of community pharmacists in implementing smoking cessation programs. Dr. Goniewicz has authored over 60 scientific papers.

Dr. Goniewicz has provided his expertise to national and international health policy organizations. He has participated in workshops focused on e-cigarette research organized by the FDA, NIH and the NIDA. He has served as a consult on tobacco product regulation to the US FDA, UK Medicines & Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA), UK National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE), and European Parliament (EU).
