America’s first cancer center is still leading the fight to understand, prevent and cure cancer — and the nation heard that message from the floor of the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday.
“Buffalo gave our nation and the world cancer research when the New York Cancer Laboratory was first established by Dr. Roswell Park in 1897,” Rep. Brian Higgins told his House colleagues on January 26, urging them to make sure that cancer research is a national funding priority.
“Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center continues that mission today, and the research put out by its doctors has led to many breakthroughs that alleviate suffering due to cancer every day,” the congressman continued, elaborating on President Obama’s call for increased funding for biomedical research the night before in his State of the Union address. “Mister Speaker, I urge my colleagues to support a renewed commitment to cancer research because there is no better time than now. Alleviating suffering and death due to cancer in our lifetime should not only be Congress’s goal, it should be America’s goal, and we should insist on a huge federal investment toward that goal.”
