Cori Lecture Presented At Roswell Park

BUFFALO, NY – Nahum Sonenberg, PhD, will present the Cori Lecture at Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center Wednesday, July 22, from 8 – 9 am in the David C. Hohn, MD Lecture Hall, Research Studies Center, Elm & Carlton Streets, Buffalo, NY. The lecture is open to the public.

The Cori Lecture honors Drs. Carl and Gerty Cori, the Nobel-Prize winning researchers who served on the faculty of Roswell Park from 1922 to 1933. Dr. Sonenberg, a James McGill Professor in the Department of Biochemistry at the Rosalind and Morris Goodman Cancer Centre, Montreal, Quebec, Canada, will present “Translational Control of Cancer.” Dr. Sonenberg’s research interest has been to understand the importance of the control of protein synthesis in biology and medicine. He investigates the importance of translational control in cancer, obesity, innate immunity, and learning and memory. He also has had a long-term interest in virology, studying poliovirus, rhinoviruses, and HIV.Dr. Sonenberg was awarded the Robert L. Nobel Prize from the National Cancer Institute of Canada in 2002. He is an International Research Scholar of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and has been a fellow of the Royal Society of Canada since 1992. In 2006, Dr. Sonenberg was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and The Royal Society, United Kingdom.

While at Roswell Park, the Coris initiated work on the chemistry of the glycogen-glucose cycle. This work earned them the 1948 Nobel Prize in Physiology and Medicine. With this honor, Gerty Cori became the first American woman and the third woman in the world to be awarded the Nobel Prize. Dr. Carl Cori presented the first Cori Lecture at Roswell Park in 1968.
