Charges for Services

Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center and Roswell Park Care Network were recently notified of a cybersecurity issue involving a vendor, UnitedHealth Group’s Change Healthcare — a healthcare technology company that provides revenue and payment tools. While efforts continue at a national level to address this incident, we are contacting you to make you aware of payment issues affecting some services provided at Roswell Park.

RPCI Clinical Practice Plan billing: If you received a Roswell Park bill before Feb. 21, 2024, payable to “RPCI Clinical Practice Plan" (see lower portion of bill) and have not yet paid, the system is out of service until further notice and we are unable to process your payment at this time. There will be no penalty or referral to a collection agency for late payments under this plan. Bills for ongoing appointments and clinic visits will not be issued for the short term. Patients will be instructed accordingly on how to make payments for these services once systems are operational again.

IMPORTANT: Outside of billing for those services, all other hospital service billings related to Roswell Park remain unaffected, and payment of all other hospital bills can continue as normal.

Affordable Care Act hospital mandates

United States hospitals are required to give public access to the list of hospital charges for items and services they provide. In compliance with this mandate, we have provided a link below to download the listing. Unfortunately, this does not accurately reflect what our patients pay because it does not take into account a patient’s health insurance arrangements, any financial aid, and state and federal reimbursable care support. If you have questions regarding your bill or would like to better understand cancer care costs for your treatment, please call Roswell Park’s financial counselors at 716-845-4782.

The Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act

During the pandemic the United States government has implanted the CARES Act. Section 3202 (b2) of the CARES act requires all providers to list the cash price for a COVID-19 Diagnostic test. In compliance with this mandate, please be advised the cash price for a COVID-19 Diagnostic test is $98.

Regardless if a patient has insurance coverage or is uninsured, this cash amount does not reflect what a patient will be required to pay for a COVID-19 test. New York state insurance companies are required to pay for testing and are not permitted to apply patient cost sharing. Financial assistance may be provided to patients in the unlikely event a patient incurs a bill for COVID-19 testing. If you have any questions regarding your financial liability for this test, please call Roswell Park’s  Financial Counselors at 716-845-4782.

Non-Roswell Park providers

As a Roswell Park patient, you may receive treatment or services from providers that have privileges at Roswell Park, but are not Roswell Park staff. This means you could potentially receive an additional bill if the provider is not participating with your health plan. To check your coverage for a non-Roswell Park provider, please review the list and contact their office.

Frequently asked questions about hospital charges

If you are insured, the fees that the hospital charges are unlikely to affect the amount that you are required to pay. The amount you have to pay after insurance payment is largely dictated by copayment and coinsurance, which is set by your insurer.

Roswell Park is committed to making healthcare more affordable for our patients and offers discounts for all uninsured patients:

  • If you are uninsured and a New York State resident with financial hardship, Roswell Park offers a Charity Care Program. The level of your discount is dependent on your income, asset level and household size. Information on our Charity Care Program can be found here.
  • If you are not a New York State resident or you are uninsured and do not have a financial hardship, significant discounts off charges are still available to you.
Similar to the answer in the first question, the hospital’s charges are unlikely to impact the amount that you will pay. Often high deductible and copayment plans have a maximum liability per year for the patient. Please check with your health insurer to see if you have an out-of-pocket maximum on your insurance plan. If you do, when receiving care for a chronic illness, you are likely to meet that maximum regardless of charges or where you receive care.
Roswell Park has copay assistance for New York State residents only. The level of your discount is dependent on your income, asset level and household size. Information on our Charity Care Program can be found here.
If you have insurance and are concerned about your copayment amounts, please call your health insurance provider for your benefits. If you need additional assistance, you can contact the Roswell Park financial counselors at 716-845-4782. If you do not have insurance, please contact the Roswell Park financial counselors for a cost estimate for your care.
