Description of Duties:
The Laboratory Technician performs technical laboratory work in a scientific research laboratory. The employee will investigate and assess the chemical safety of emerging flavored tobacco products. He/she will be responsible for the identification and measuring concentration of the ingredients in nicotine-containing products, including the selection and utilization of appropriate chemical and performance tests to measure product characteristics, and the development of suitable methods where none is available. The employee will be required to analyze various biological and environmental samples for tobacco-related toxicants. He/she also will assess the biomarkers of exposure to tobacco product constituents in biological samples (for example blood, urine, saliva), including the selection of appropriate analytical methods and sample preparation protocols.
The applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree in a science-related field; or an Associate’s degree in a science-related field and the equivalent of two years of full-time laboratory experience. The preferred candidate will have at least a B.Sc. in chemistry or related field or one year experience working in analytical laboratory (of similar experience). Familiarity with the applications of gas and liquid chromatography (GC-FID, GC-NPD, GC-MS, GC-QTOF-MS, HPLC-MS/MS, UPLC-MS/MS and/or similar chromatography techniques). Experience in laboratory testing of drugs, nicotine, toxicants, impurities, residual solvents, etc. Experience in laboratory-scale manufacturing of reference products, including development of process development and testing protocols. Ability to prepare documentation for new nicotine-containing products, including the preparation of formulas for costing purposes, ingredient listings for regulatory bodies, Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS), and documentation for the production of reference products. Is knowledgeable and has experience with method calibration and validation, and GLP policies on chemical safety.
This is a grant-funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables is required.
