Description of Duties

This is a trainee position. Incumbents will be engaged in trainee duties that may lead to the full performance level of a Sterile Processing Technician. Duties include: Inspects, cleans, decontaminates, assembles, and sterilizes or disinfects surgical instruments, trays/sets, equipment, scopes, surgical case carts and other medical equipment and supplies delivered to Sterile Processing from various areas such as surgery, outpatient clinics, satellite clinics, radiation, radiology, Pulmonary, Respiratory, etc.; Cleans and sterilizes all surgical highly technical specialty patient care instruments and items, such as Robotics, Surgical Drills, Neuro/Ortho/Head and Neck loaners, etc. via specific manufacturer instructions; Process patient care items per manufacturer instructions via Evotech, Sterrad, Autoclave (Steam, Gamma, Gravity) as per procedure and infection control guidelines; Sets up code cart, isolation cart, cast cart, and surgery emergency carts Obtains surgical schedule from admin and determines appropriate surgical trays needed for each case; Orders supplies from Distribution as needed; Maintains instrument and linen par levels; Monitors expiration dates on critical care items and equipment; Completes daily tests on sterilizers, sterrad, sonics, washers, evotech, high level disinfectant, scope buddy; records results; Logs information for all forms of sterilization, eye wash station, temperature and humidity, and air pressure on a daily basis; Monitors and logs information for Quality Improvement purposes on a continual basis; Communicates with Surgery regarding daily usage of surgical items needed for each surgical procedure on a continual basis; Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety and compliance standards; Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, reading current literature, and participating in in-service meetings and workshops; Prepares written documentation as required by the profession and the department; maintains, distributes, analyzes and projects information for required records, reports and statistics as directed.


Applicants must possess a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma. The preferred candidate will have training in SPD or an approved program, a CRCST Certification, basic computer skills and good communication interpersonal skills.
