Description of Duties

The Pathology Clinical Research Assistant: processes requests for material from the tissue archive for research purposes for clinical trials and expedited protocols; assumes responsibility for the intake and removal of tissue material from the tissue archive; performs data entry and modification of information in the tissue archive database; performs data queries from the tissue archive database; prepares completed projects for shipment to the requestor; works with Tissue Procurement and can handle frozen tissue using liquid nitrogen or dry ice for various requests; handles slides for TMA construction; follows up on material released from the bank; keeps track of billable services related to clinical trials and expedited protocols; works with CRS nurses and PRN staff to ensure requests are completed in a timely manner; works with outside organizations to ensure that the material requested is received in a timely manner; coordinates shipment of clinical trial material to and from Roswell Park; Receives and documents requests from Clinical Research Services and outside requesting agencies for the use of material stored in the tissue archive; Files and removes material from the tissue archive's physical inventory; maintains the integrity of the physical/electronic inventory for retrieval and chain of custody control of stored material; Utilizes the pathology and tissue archive information systems and LIMS to generate work requests, packing lists, and project summaries; Enters additional annotative information into the tissue archive information system and clinical trial database (e.g. from EHR); Coordinates data extraction for research purposes from various organizational repositories and medical record; monitors data entered for completeness and accuracy. Prepares routine reports on clinical trial/expedited protocol tissue archive utilization for invoicing and statistical purposes; Maintains records and files of work completed; utilizes photocopy and office equipment to support the operational and administrative activities of the department; Responds to inquiries regarding clinical trial/expedited protocol tissue archive requests; Handles laboratory specimens utilizing appropriate blood/body fluid precautions; Maintains established departmental policies and procedures, objectives, quality assurance programs, safety and compliance standards; Enhances professional growth and development by participating in educational programs, reading current literature and participating in in-service meetings and workshops; Prepares other written documentation as required by the profession and the department; maintains, distributes, analyzes and projects information for required records, reports and statistics as directed.

Qualifications

The applicant must have an Associate’s degree and the equivalent of two years of full-time experience in a clinical or research setting; or a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma and the equivalent of four years of full-time experience as a Tissue Archivist. The preferred candidate will possess working knowledge of medical, pathology, and laboratory terminology, experience in the use of computers for data entry and the ability to organize and handle details with ease. The preferred candidate will possess: excellent verbal and written communication skills; significant attention to detail and self-directed; strong customer service skills; ability to work in fast pace environment; take initiative; and strong ability to multi-task and organize; ability to perform duties and problem solve with minimal supervision; proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.

This is a grant-funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables is required.
