Description of Duties

The Histotechnologist II performs simple and complex tasks within the Histology section of the Pathology department. Routine responsibilities include specimen acceptance, accessioning, and tissue preparation. Prepares tissue for microscopic review; stains slides with special stains including immunohistochemistry; maintains laboratory equipment and completes appropriate quality control records; maintains the laboratory in a clean fashion; with advanced training may perform frozen sectioning in the surgical frozen suite on a limited basis; performs gross dissection of biopsy specimens on a limited basis.

Qualifications

Applicants must have a License to practice as a Certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York; or Eligibility for licensure as a Certified Histological Technician, Clinical Laboratory Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technologist in the State of New York. The applicant must have a Bachelor’s degree in Histological or Clinical Laboratory Technology; or a Bachelor’s degree in a related discipline and completion of a Histological Technician Certificate program recognized by New York State for licensure exam eligibility; or an Associate’s degree in Histological or Clinical Laboratory Technology and the equivalent of two years of full-time Histology experience including the performance of immunohistochemistry, frozen section or grossing biopsy/surgical specimens; or an Associate’s degree in a related discipline, completion of a Histological Technician Certificate program recognized by New York State for licensure exam eligibility and the equivalent of two years of full-time Histology experience including the performance of immunohistochemistry, frozen section or grossing biopsy/surgical specimens. The preferred candidate will have the following: NYS License or be eligible as a Certified Histological Technician or Clinical Laboratory Technician; previous/current Histology experience; previous/current laboratory experience.
