The Clinical Informatics Specialist works under the direction of the Chief Medical Information Officer (CMIO), and working with more senior Clinical Informatics team members, uses their knowledge of patient interests and needs, provider and ancillary staff workflows, clinical informatics, and information technology to support and disseminate the strategic initiatives and vision for patient engagement application projects as developed by the CMIO; develops and refines informatics strategies and vision for patient engagement applications that will allow Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center (Roswell Park) to better engage patients as partners to and with their healthcare teams and to also allow Roswell Park to be more competitive by improving clinical outcomes, streamlining and optimizing clinical systems workflows and decreasing operational costs in collaboration with the CMIO; facilitates communication and acts as an advocate and change agent across all levels of the organization to promote the adoption of new processes and technologies. The incumbent must be passionate about, and act as an advocate and change agent for, patient engagement and empowerment. The incumbent will need to be a creative and out-of-the-box thinker, with strong design and analytics intuition and expertise. The incumbent will need to know or quickly learn all patient-provider touch points throughout the oncology treatment relationship from consultation and/or diagnosis through end-of-life or survivorship care planning.
Applicants must possess a Doctoral degree in a health, computer science, or informatics related field or a Master’s degree in a health, computer science, or informatics related field, and the equivalent of one year of full-time healthcare informatics and/or direct patient care experience in a healthcare delivery setting or a Bachelor’s degree in a health, computer science, or informatics related field, and the equivalent of three years of full-time healthcare informatics and/or direct patient care experience in a healthcare delivery setting or an Associates degree in a health, computer science, or informatics related field, and the equivalent of five years of full-time healthcare informatics and/or direct patient care experience in a healthcare delivery setting or a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma with a diploma or certificate in a health, computer science, or informatics related field and the equivalent of seven years of full-time healthcare informatics and/or direct patient care experience in a healthcare delivery setting. The preferred candidate will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills; Must possess advanced understanding of clinical workflows and the integration of information technology systems; Must be able to work effectively in a collaborative, team-oriented environment with diverse groups of professionals; Must be able to bring a diverse group of individuals to consensus in planning sessions; Must be able to lead and engage patients in design and planning meetings; Must be able to lead and engage teams of IT professionals, clinicians, and clinical support staff; Must have excellent organizational, presentation, communication, facilitation, and leadership skills – must be able to present material, concepts, and vision, clearly and with confidence; Must be able to devise methodologies and solutions, perform analyses, and relate relevant information to and for appropriate stakeholders and audiences; Must have the ability to flex with the ever changing needs of a complex and dynamic organization and healthcare industry; Must have advanced knowledge and experience in the principles and practices of clinical informatics and systems analysis; computer programming and knowledge of computer operations a plus; Advanced knowledge of healthcare related IT systems such as EHR, ancillary systems (lab, pathology, etc.), ADT systems, and interface engines a plus; Experience with the design, build, validation, and training of EHR systems a plus; Must have vision – see the big picture, bring that vision to the clinical and IT staff, and encourage and solicit participation and support for such vision; Must be motivated, able to work independently with minimal supervision, and work on multiple highly complex projects at the same time; Must have excellent critical thinking and analytical aptitude; Must have the aptitude for creative and out-of-the-box thinking; Must have effective planning and problem-solving skills; Must have strong analytical skills necessary to collaborate with CMIO and other senior Clinical Informatics team members in the design of complex IT solutions; Must have confidence making complex decisions with great impact to patients and clinical end-users alike often with little available guidelines, precedence, or established best practices; Must have the ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure, fast-paced environment; Must have strong understanding of hospital business and clinical operations; Must have comprehensive knowledge of clinical best practices, policies, regulatory, and compliance standards; Must have the ability to translate technical terminology and concepts for understanding by non-technical audiences; Must have the ability to support a flexible weekday work schedule which could include early morning or early evening meetings to accommodate the schedules of other executive and clinical staff; While infrequent, must have the ability to occasionally support a flexible schedule which could include long weekday hours, evenings, night shifts, or weekends to assist and/or oversee the training and support needed for major implementation efforts; Have the ability to travel - travel is minimal and would include conferences and networking with regional and national cancer centers or informatics groups.
