Description of Duties:
The Programmer/Analyst position involves challenging and creative opportunities for a talented and independent scientific programmer to contribute to novel algorithm and other developments to support high-throughput genomic analyses. The Programmer/Analyst position is with the widely used and respected Bioconductor project (https://bioconductor.org) for the analysis and comprehension of high throughput genomic data. The work will be in the R programming language, with additional implementation using C and/or C++ for performance-critical sections. Specific short-term development directions include support for computation on large out-of-memory data, and development of core infrastructure to work with genomic ranges and related concepts. The Programmer/Analyst will participate in day-to-day project maintenance activities, including new package review, assisting with maintaining internal and contributed packages, and with opportunity to contribute to activities related to training and outreach.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree in computer science, management information systems or a related field and the equivalent of two years of full-time experience in programming of mainframe or PC information systems as it relates to technology used at the Institute. The preferred candidate will have a strong understanding of mathematical and algorithmic aspects of software development, experience writing R and C/C++ software in scientific domains related to high-throughput genomic data, will be conversant in relevant biological domains, have established record working in a collaborative environment , and will be able to effectively balance responding to supervision with independent effort. They will rely on close collaboration with other team members for support, become familiar with the R programming language and Bioconductor ecosystem, and should be comfortable with these challenges and opportunities.
This is a grant-funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables is required.
