Description of Duties:
The Intellectual Property Manager independently manages the Roswell Park invention disclosure and patent portfolio; receives and assists in the review of all invention disclosures and works with the Director and Licensing Manager to develop patentability assessments and patent prosecution strategies. Ensures timely and strategic management of all patent filing, prosecution, and maintenance matters. Leads communications with inventors, Technology Transfer staff, licensees, and external patent counsel to direct all aspects of the patent application, prosecution and maintenance processes. Creates and oversees a comprehensive docket for patent-related action items. Maintains official correspondence with US and foreign patent offices and updates departmental database with relevant data. Conducts review of invoices from external patent counsel for accuracy and cost-saving measures and assists with general administrative tasks for the processing of such invoices. Manages all reporting and compliance measures for federally-funded inventions to the U.S. government and granting agencies via the departmental database and iEdison online database. The Intellectual Property Manager assists Director and Licensing Manager with IP license compliance matters when required and handles routine internal and external inquiries for patent and agreement-related statistics.
Applicants must have a Bachelor’s degree and the equivalent of three years of full-time experience in a firm or in-house position involving intellectual property matters. Applicants must also be certified as a Paralegal. The preferred candidate will have five or more years in a law firm or in-house position involving intellectual property matters. The preferred candidate will have a thorough knowledge of and experience with patent law, USPTO/International patent filing and prosecution processes. Prior experience in academic technology transfer setting a plus. The ideal candidate is a self-starter who thrives in an environment that encourages strategic thinking, and enjoys working independently in a collaborative setting. The preferred candidate will be detail and deadline oriented, possess excellent verbal and written communication skills and possess the ability to quickly communicate complex issues clearly and succinctly. The preferred candidate will have excellent organizational and priority setting skills, good judgment, the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, the ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information, be customer focused and be able to demonstrate specific instances of extraordinary client service.
This is a grant-funded position. Compliance with funding requirements such as time and effort reporting, grant deliverables, and contract deliverables is required.
