Description of Duties

The High Voltage Electrician works directly for the Electrical Engineering Manager to troubleshoot, repair, install and service medium and high voltage electrical systems and associated equipment. The High Voltage Electrician operates, inspects and performs preventive maintenance on medium and high voltage underground distribution systems. They also prepare plans and manage own projects within allotted budgets and perform related work as required.

Qualifications

Applicants must have an Associate’s degree in electrical technology plus the equivalent of six years of full-time experience, three of which must have been in medium or high voltage electrical systems operations and maintenance and three of which must have been in building electrical systems and electrical utilities installation and repair that consists of all the following: variable speed drives, fire alarm and security systems; or an Apprentice program plus the equivalent of six years of full-time experience, three of which must have been in medium or high voltage electrical systems operations and maintenance and three of which must have been in building electrical systems and electrical utilities installation and repair that consists of all the following: variable speed drives, fire alarm and security systems; or a High School Diploma or High School Equivalency Diploma and the equivalent of two years of full-time electrical experience plus the equivalent of six years of full-time experience, three of which must have been in medium or high voltage electrical systems operations and maintenance and three of which must have been in building electrical systems and electrical utilities installation and repair that consist of all the following: variable speed drives, fire alarm and security systems. The preferred candidate will have knowledge of electrical theory and terminology, and mathematics used in electrical calculations, of methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the maintenance, repair, and testing of high and medium voltage underground systems, and associated equipment, and of safety and safe working practices pertaining to high voltage electrical work, including ensuring clearances, and working on energized lines and equipment. They will also have knowledge of job planning and basic estimating and operating, of performing repairs, fabrication, operations and maintenance of medium and high voltage electrical systems and associated equipment, of using testing equipment and troubleshooting complex electrical problems and develop effective resolutions, and of operating and maintaining tools and equipment of the trade. The preferred candidate will have knowledge of establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of the work such as customers, project managers, inspectors, and other crafts, including assisting others and working cooperatively, will have the ability to work in a team environment, to make critical decisions with minimal guidance, to manage and prioritize multiple tasks at one time, many of which have a critical impact on organization operations, and to work in a frequently stressful environment. They will also have the capability of working in confined space, of working in harsh environments, i.e. extremely hot or cold, and will have the ability to wear employer-provided equipment, such as an arc flash suit, including head gear and gloves.
