Description of Duties:
The Corporate Coding Specialist abstracts data directly from the Electronic Medical Record and assigns appropriate Evaluation and Management codes along with ICD-9 and CPT codes to endure optimal billing. E&M codes are assigned in accordance with nationally mandated guidelines. Coding of diagnoses is performed in accordance with ICD-9 coding guidelines for hospital reimbursement and CPT-4 coding for hospital and professional reimbursement. The Corporate Coding Specialist also reviews all medical record data to ensure compliance standards are maintained prior to coding/billing of charges. This includes Physicians at Teaching Hospital (PATH) standards, CMS documentation guidelines, OIG standards, medical necessity standards and global billing polices.
Applicants must possess an Associate’s degree in Health Information Management and certification as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT); or an Associate’s degree and certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC); or be currently enrolled in an accredited Health Information Management program with at least 45 credit hours towards an Associate’s degree and the equivalent of six months of related experience*; or a High School diploma or G.E.D. and the equivalent of two years of full-time related experience and certification as a Certified Professional Coder (CPC).
Incumbents must obtain certification as a RHIT or CPC within the one year probationary period for this position as a condition of continued employment.
The preferred candidate will have experience working with an Electronic Medical Record and Evaluation and Management (E&M) Coding for professional billing. The preferred candidate will have ICD-10 training and be able to work as a team player.
