Once again Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has earned a place among the nation’s top cancer centers on the annual U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals list. Ranked #14 out of 899 centers for 2020-21, it’s the only nationally ranked cancer center in Western and Upstate New York and one of only two cancer centers in New York State to achieve a place among the top 15. The ranking puts Roswell Park in the top 1.5% of cancer hospitals in the U.S.
Roswell Park earned the maximum score possible in:
- Patient survival
- Patient services (such as programs for pain management and palliative care)
- Patient experience (based on patient opinions about the quality of their inpatient experience)
- Patients going home after hospitalization (instead of to a long-term-care or other facility)
- Advanced technologies (such as image-guided radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy and shaped-beam radiation)
It also was named a high-performing center for colon cancer surgery and lung cancer surgery.
“It takes all of us to achieve a record like Roswell Park’s,” says Roswell Park President and CEO Candace S. Johnson, PhD, who is also the M&T Bank Presidential Chair in Leadership at the cancer center. “We are working tirelessly to build more bridges of opportunity, to develop the talents of every employee so that we can all keep making a real difference for our patients and community. And that generates great pride across the team that earned this status as one of the nation’s most impactful cancer centers.”
“Quality is the focus in everything we do, and it shows,” adds Stephen Edge, MD, FACS, FASCO, a surgical oncologist and Vice President of Healthcare Outcomes and Policy at Roswell Park. “Even as the criteria for this list get more exacting every year, we consistently perform well in side-by-side comparisons with America’s other elite cancer centers, because we put the patient at the center of every decision and build our care around them.”
The U.S. News honor builds on recognition of the quality of care at Roswell Park, which consistently receives some of the highest patient-satisfaction scores in the nation. Roswell Park has also been named a Blue Distinction Center for Cancer Care (Blood & Marrow Transplants and Cellular Therapy), an Optum Cancer Center of Excellence, an Age-Friendly Health System and an approved Commission on Cancer Center.
Roswell Park was one of the first institutions in the U.S. to be recognized by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) as a comprehensive cancer center, signifying that it provides expert cancer care and conducts top-tier research aimed at finding ways to prevent and cure cancer, with NCI support. Three major studies have found that long-term survival rose from 6% to 20% overall, as well as within specific cancer types, for patients who were treated from the start at NCI-designated comprehensive cancer centers, compared with those treated elsewhere.
