Questions About Medical Marijuana? Get the Answers Nov. 13

Three marijuana leaves arranged next to each other

If you or a loved one has ever wondered about using medical marijuana to alleviate the side effects of cancer or cancer treatment, Roswell Park invites you to hear from the experts Wednesday, November 13, from 6-7 p.m. Amy Case, MD, FAAHPM, Chair of the Department of Supportive Care, and Eric Hansen, MD, Department of Supportive and Palliative Care, will discuss:

  • The potential risks and benefits of medical marijuana
  • The types of symptoms it may relieve
  • The different ways it can be administered (pills, oils, etc.)
  • The process for becoming certified to use it
  • The cost of purchasing it

Dr. Case says many people believe “it fixes everything, and it’s ‘natural.’ But it has 450 chemicals in it, and it interacts with other drugs, including some of the chemotherapies. It also has several adverse effects that we have to screen for and monitor for. Often the elderly can’t tolerate it. And we have to screen for a history of mental illness, because that can actually be made worse with marijuana.”

She and Dr. Hansen will answer questions and provide brochures with key facts about medical marijuana.
