Roswell Park Ranks 14th on List of Nation's Best Hospitals for Cancer
Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has once again earned a place among the nation’s top cancer hospitals, ranking #14 on U.S. News & World Report’s annual list and earning recognition as a high-performing center in colon cancer surgery and lung cancer surgery. U.S. News reviewed 885 U.S. cancer centers for the list.
Roswell Park is the only cancer center in Western and Upstate New York ranking among the top 50 cancer hospitals on the list, and one of only two New York State centers ranking in the top 15.
This year U.S. News made key changes in the way it calculated the rankings, expanding criteria to include such measures as patient satisfaction and how often patients are discharged directly from the hospital to their home, as well as risk adjustment to account for the level of complex care involved in treating sicker patients.
Roswell Park received the top possible scores in categories that included patient survival, patient experience, patients going home after hospitalization and advanced technologies.
“We take our responsibility to provide outstanding care and support services for patients in our community so seriously, and to see that effort acknowledged in what the U.S. News team saw when they compared us to other top centers is so rewarding,” says Roswell Park President & CEO Candace S. Johnson, PhD. “I have to thank my incredible team of employees for dedicating themselves to providing an outstanding overall experience for our patients, as well as the amazing donors and supporters who make it possible for us to offer the cutting-edge therapies and tools that enable us to offer care at the level we do.”
“This ranking from U.S. News & World Report, together with our recently awarded, highest-ever funding as a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center, underscores that Roswell Park is one of the leading centers for cancer treatment and research in the world,” says Stephen Edge, MD, FACS, FASCO, a national expert on healthcare quality measurement who serves as Vice President of Healthcare Outcomes and Policy at the cancer center. “At Roswell Park, continuous analysis and improvement are built into our culture, driving our care higher and higher.”
Roswell Park has also been recognized by the BlueCross BlueShield Association as a Blue Distinction Center for both Cancer Care and Transplant, and consistently receives patient-satisfaction scores that are among the highest in the country.
Ben Harder, Managing Editor and Chief of Health Analysis of U.S. News, says the magazine’s annual Best Hospital list is intended “to make hospital quality more transparent to healthcare consumers nationwide. By providing the most comprehensive data available on nearly every hospital across the United States, we give patients, families and physicians information to support their search for the best care across a range of procedures, conditions and specialties.”
