Who can resist a full box of crayons and a black-and-white design to color in?
Patients, visitors and staff are invited to rediscover the joy of coloring through a new project introduced recently by the Office of the Patient/Family Experience. A large mural of fanciful flowers and leaves has been installed on a wall inside the entrance to the 7 West inpatient area, with a caddy of crayons in easy reach. The idea: to bring everyone together to create something beautiful.

Sign up!The artwork in public areas and patient spaces is usually the work of professional artists, but “we wanted to change that,” says Kara Eaton, MA, Executive Director of the Patient/Family Experience. “Here at Roswell Park, we want to go beyond just showcasing artwork. We want to give patients and staff the ability to create their own artwork.”
Her office plans to install similar murals in three other inpatient units throughout the hospital. They’ll add a new dimension to Roswell Park’s emphasis on healing through the arts, which encompasses the Creative Arts Team, a lending library of artwork in some inpatient areas, a rotating exhibition of works by neighborhood artists, and a collection of hundreds of paintings, photos, sculptures and other works displayed in the hospital and the Scott Bieler Clinical Sciences Center.
The mural project is made possible by a Quality of Life grant from the Roswell Park Alliance Foundation.
