Waiting for test results can be nerve-racking, especially for cancer patients. Starting November 1, 2017, Roswell Park will cut the wait time, delivering lab results directly to the secure Patient Portal (MyRoswell) within 72 hours and radiology reports within seven days from the date the reports are signed as final. In the near future, pathology reports will also be available on the Portal within seven days after they are completed.
The tests are not being processed faster — it’s just that patients now have access to the results sooner, according to Clinical Informatics Specialist Melissa Witt, BS, BSN, RN. In the past, she says, physicians usually waited to review the results with their patients in person, to reduce the risk that the information could be misinterpreted or cause unnecessary anxiety.
For some people, that still might be the ideal situation, Witt says: “Some physicians may tell their patients, ‘Your results will be there in 72 hours, but I’m more comfortable having a conversation about this face-to-face. I’d appreciate it if we talked about it first.’”
Still, some patients prefer to see the results as soon as they’re available, and that’s their right, she adds. “This is becoming the norm. Patients want the information, and they’re making themselves heard. I think it’s good that we provide it. It’s their health record; they’re entitled to it.
“When they know more about their disease, they’re more educated and can make better health decisions.”
