Meet the Team: Dr. Philip Williams
As a native of Buffalo, NY, I was well aware of the work being done at Roswell Park and its importance in the Western New York community. So when I was offered an opportunity for employment, I jumped at the chance. The decision was an easy one to make and I’m proud to call myself a member of Roswell Park’s team.
I’m a relatively new face at RPCI, having joined the Department of Dentistry as an Associate Professor of Oncology in January 2014.
After graduating from Canisius College and the University at Buffalo School of Dental Medicine, I was excited to help others achieve better smiles, good oral function and sound aesthetics. I’m now able to accomplish all of these things while providing support and assistance to cancer patients.
At Roswell Park, my work primarily deals with early detection of oral cancer. Our department uses specialized lights to look inside patients’ oral cavities, allowing us to detect cancer before it can be seen with the naked eye. I also directly assist people with their symptoms following cancer treatment. Depending on the type of cancer and ensuing treatment, patients may experience symptoms such as dry mouth and sores.
Additionally, if patients are missing teeth due to surgery or other cancer treatments, our department provides restoration through the use of dental implants. Dental implants have essentially changed the scope of dentistry in the last 10 years and will continue to be the future of the field. These implants provide restorations that are almost as good as natural teeth and allow us to anchor prosthetic devices to improve function.
Words can’t describe what it means to not only be employed in my chosen profession, but to also be working at a place like Roswell Park. It’s proven to be a wonderful experience and has provided me with a new set of professional challenges and experiences. Overall, I couldn’t ask for better mentors and colleagues than the ones I’ve met in the Head & Neck / Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery Center. To know that I’m part of a team that helps people and changes lives is a truly remarkable feeling.
