RPCI Volunteers Leave a Lasting Impression
April 22-26, 2013 marks National Volunteer Week and I am proud to call myself a volunteer as a front-door greeter at Roswell Park Cancer Institute.
You can find me every Wednesday morning near Roswell Park’s front entrance, holding the door for visitors, helping new patients find their way around the building, and assisting with various drop-offs and deliveries. As a volunteer, I am here to help in any way I can.
I’m also very aware of the fact that, for those who may be first-time visitors, my face is the first they will see. With that in mind, I always try to make a positive first impression on behalf of Roswell Park, greeting each person warmly and with a smile. Some people entering our front doors may feel a bit nervous, so I do my best to make all visitors feel at ease.
After a career working at a parcel delivery service, I find it so rewarding to spend my retirement greeting folks who come to Roswell Park. RPCI holds a special place in my heart, as both my mother and a good friend of mine received treatment and excellent care here. Because of that, I consider my volunteer work a form of giving back.
Along with donating my time at the Institute each Wednesday, I also volunteer at some of Roswell Park’s largest events such as The Ride for Roswell and All Star Night. My volunteer position has afforded me the opportunity to get to know some truly wonderful people including visitors, other volunteers, and members of the staff here at RPCI.
In addition to front-door greeters like myself, we have dozens of other volunteer positions. For example, if you’ve ever enjoyed the music that fills our lobby on a daily basis, you can likely thank a volunteer. We also receive assistance from volunteers at our information desk, in the Pastoral Care department and with clerical support, among other areas.
Being a part of the volunteer program at Roswell Park has been such an enriching experience for me. If you are interested in joining RPCI’s team of volunteers, please contact the Volunteer Office at 716-845-5708 or fill out a Volunteer Application Form.
