Roswell Park’s Long-Standing Cancer History
Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center has a deep history in cancer care. Founded in 1898 as the nation’s first dedicated cancer center, Roswell Park grew from the vision of Dr. Roswell Park, an esteemed surgeon who believed that investigations in both the lab and the clinic should go hand-in-hand. We’ve been providing our patients with this multidisciplinary approach to cancer care for well over a century.
Today, Roswell Park is one of the leading cancer facilities in the country. Our research abilities have led to historic breakthroughs in the way we understand, prevent and cure cancer. That expertise also enhances the way we train the next generation of physician leaders.
Partnerships Provide New Capabilities
Pediatric cancer and blood disorders have taken center stage with the opening of Kaleida Health’s John R. Oishei Children’s Hospital. Roswell Park and Oishei Children’s hospital have partnered to open a dedicated Cancer and Blood Disorders Program in the new freestanding children’s hospital. In addition, Roswell Park has opened the new Katherine, Anne and Donna Gioia Pediatric Hematology Oncology Outpatient Center. Both are brand-new, state-of-the art facilities.
The new outpatient center is connected to the Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at Buffalo, as well as UBMD Pediatrics, which has 13 additional subspecialties on the Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus.
Thanks to this partnership, we are now able to offer new capabilities and specialized services, such as:
- An expanded bone marrow transplant program for children of all ages. This gives our youngest patients access to transplants at Roswell Park for the first time.
- Expanded blood disorder program to treat nonmalignant disorders such as sickle cell disease, anemias, bleeding conditions and thrombosis (blood clots).
- The Pediatric Experimental Therapeutics Program, which offers new, advanced, experimental treatments, therapies and medicines to children with all types of cancer
Our New Outpatient and Inpatient Pediatric Facilities
The Roswell Park Oishei Children’s Cancer and Blood Disorders Program facilities are designed specifically for your child’s needs as he or she navigates a life-threatening disease or an ongoing illness. The bright and airy facility also helps protect your child’s immune system — if it’s severely weakened, he or she will be in the safest environment for care.
As part of our focus on family-centered care, your child will have full access to hallways and playrooms. There’s also a fully stocked kitchen where he or she can grab a favorite treat at any time, day or night.
All outpatient care for our pediatric cancer and blood disorder patients is now in one central location and next door to the inpatient pediatric hospital. Our new outpatient center allows for easy access to radiation therapy, gamma knife services, labs, and other testing. The facility is designed to bring comfort and support to your child and family, and is a caring place for activities, social time or quiet rest.
