Adult Leukemia Blood and Marrow Transplantation

  • Philip McCarthy, MD, Director of Roswell Park's BMT Program, contributes to the nationally ranked outcomes for patients treated at Roswell Park.

Roswell Park offers the most experienced adult blood and marrow transplantation (BMT) service in Western New York, performing 100-120 transplants every year. Because BMT offers the best chance for curing leukemia, Roswell Park physicians who treat leukemia patients work closely with our BMT specialists in monitoring the status of all of our leukemia patients, and identify those who might benefit from this lifesaving option. Planning ahead ensures that everything will be in order, if you should need a transplant. This is especially important if you will need to find a blood or marrow donor.

Better Outcomes

Outcomes for patients treated through the BMT Program at Roswell Park are among the highest in the nation. According to a 2012 report from the Center for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR), the one-year survival rate for transplant patients treated at Roswell Park between 2008 and 2010 was significantly higher than for patients treated at other BMT centers, placing RPCI among the top 10 of U.S. centers offering BMT.
