Improving Outcomes Through Multidisciplinary Care
Our gastrointestinal experts practice an extraordinary kind of teamwork that we call our multidisciplinary approach. This model was a novel concept when first pioneered by our founder Dr. Roswell Park in 1898. He placed the patient at the center of a diverse team of specialists, devoted to sharing their expertise to help people with cancer. The new approach got notable results: Cancer patients began to live longer.
Since then, we’ve expanded our understanding of cancer beyond anything Dr. Park could have imagined. And we’ve kept pace by constantly refining our multidisciplinary care, the gold standard for today’s cancer care.
RPCI’s gastrointestinal team calls upon the best combination of pathologists, diagnostic and interventional radiologists, surgeons and chemotherapy and radiotherapy specialists — as well as gastroenterologists, physician assistants, nurses, psychologists, social workers, pain management and nutrition experts — that your unique case requires. In turn, they collaborate with your primary care physician to tailor your treatment plan and ensure continuity of care from diagnosis through recovery.
Quality of Life
From our patients’ perspective, quality health care is more than medical tests and successful treatments. Your quality of life — the ability to enjoy normal activities — is important to every member of your team.
We are committed to putting the patients' needs first, and we realize those needs are not limited to just the physical or day-to-day necessities. Our wide range of support services encompasses the mind, body and spirit in an effort to make every experience at the Institute a positive one. These services include an advocacy program, nutrition services, rehabilitation, pain management, psychosocial and pastoral support . . . everything a patient needs to focus wholly on his or her well-being.
Gallbladder and bile duct cancer patients benefit from the guidance of a patient navigator who will coordinate their care from blood work and imaging to consults, treatment, admissions and follow-up. The navigator also guides patients to services such as social work, nutrition counseling, financial and insurance assistance.
These cancers can be complicated. Each step of treatment depends on the step before it. The navigator helps ensure our patients get what they need, when they need it." -Teresa Houston, RN, BSN, OCN
