Esophageal Cancer

Esophageal cancer is rare and complex, but at Roswell Park, we treat patients with this cancer every day. We believe every patient is unique, and our esophageal cancer experts approach cancer treatment on an individual and personal basis, treating the whole person, not just the cancer.

You don’t need a cancer diagnosis to come to Roswell Park. Our gastrointestinal team also treats many patients with Barrett’s esophagus, a condition that may lead to esophageal cancer.

Roswell Park is a Blue Distinction Center for Complex and Rare Cancers — such as esophageal cancer — by the BlueCross BlueShield Association. Only 90 cancer facilities in the nation have received this distinction for complex and rare cancers.

Patients with suspected or newly-diagnosed esophageal cancer may have an initial evaluation within 24 hours. A team member will meet with you to outline further diagnostics, treatment or need for evaluation with the multidisciplinary team.

Minimally Invasive Surgery Expertise

Our surgeons are leaders in techniques for minimally invasive esophagectomy. Minimally invasive resection of the esophagus results in fewer postoperative complications, a shorter hospital stay and a more rapid return to a good quality of life.

Our Endoscopy Center brings together Advanced Endoscopy and Interventional Pulmonology services into one facility where more than 90 percent of procedures are performed on an outpatient basis.

Pioneering Clinical Trials

Roswell Park strives to find better ways to treat this disease through clinical trials, many of which have been pioneered and launched by our own translational research team.
