Breast cancer’s death rate has dropped 35 to 40% over the last 30 years and it’s because of early detection and improved treatments. That’s why we must continue to do clinical trials. We have come a long way, but we have not won this battle yet.
Clinical trials are scientific studies designed to evaluate how well a new treatment, a new drug combination, or a new approach works in a specific group of people. Today's standard treatments were first evaluated in the same way, through past clinical trials. Roswell Park’s robust research program offers breast cancer patients access to treatments that are unavailable through other cancer care providers. Some of our current trials include:
- a breast cancer vaccine to boost the immune system and train it to fight the malignant cells
- potential new drugs for breast cancer
- new ways to use existing cancer drugs or therapies
- new targets or pathways by which to attack the cancer
- new methods to predict whether a patient will respond to a particular treatment
