Roswell Park’s Multidisciplinary Approach

Dr. Fenstermaker explains why a multidisciplinary approach to treatment is exceedingly important for brain cancer patients.

At Roswell Park, we use an extraordinary kind of teamwork that we call our multidisciplinary care approach. This approach was a novel concept when our founder Dr. Roswell Park pioneered it in 1898. He placed the patient at the center of a diverse team of specialists, each with a deep understanding of an essential medical discipline and devoted to sharing their expertise in order to help people with cancer. The new approach got notable results: cancer patients began to live longer.

Since then, we’ve expanded our understanding of cancer beyond anything Dr. Park could have imagined. And we’ve kept pace by constantly refining our multidisciplinary care.

Today, we’re the only multidisciplinary group in Western New York specifically designed to treat patients with brain tumors and disorders. Our brain team calls on the best combination of experts from Pathology, Radiology, Neurosurgery, Radiation Oncology, and Medical Neuro-oncology — as well as research scientists, nurses, rehabilitation therapists, psychologists, social workers, pain management and nutrition experts — that your unique case requires. In turn, they collaborate with your primary care physician to tailor your treatment plan and ensure continuity of care from diagnosis through recovery.

It’s about more than convenience; it’s about better care. Studies show an integrated team approach results in better treatment planning, increased likelihood of accurate management and care, a more comprehensive treatment plan, and better outcomes.

One-day Clinic Means One-stop Care

When dealing with a brain tumor or disorder, you have enough to worry about without driving from place to place for separate appointments with each of the many specialists you need to see. At Roswell Park, not only do we have all the specialists you need under one roof, but you can see them all in one day.

You meet with your Roswell Park neurosurgeon in the morning. Then your surgeon discusses your case with other specialists, such as your medical oncologist or radiation oncologist, and together they map out the next steps in your treatment. You meet those specialists later the same day.

This personal approach gives you the chance to get to know your clinical team, and enables the team to better understand your needs and preferences. We’re among only a handful of health care facilities in the United States that fosters such close patient-physician connections.

Quality of Life at Roswell Park

The aim of Roswell Park, as a comprehensive cancer center, is to ensure that the patient experience it provides is second to none. That’s why our patients are encouraged to take an active role in making decisions about the quality of care they receive, as well as the quality of life they deserve.

At Roswell Park we are committed to putting the patients' needs first, and we realize those needs are not limited to just the physical or day-to-day necessities. Our wide range of support services encompasses the mind, body and spirit in an effort to make every experience at the Institute a positive one. These services include an advocacy program, nutrition services, rehabilitation, pain management, psychosocial and pastoral support . . . everything a patient needs to focus wholly on his or her well-being.

Living with Cancer

We believe survivorship begins at diagnosis and lasts a lifetime, with uninterrupted access to specialized cancer care and support. We want to ensure that all your present and long-term needs — physical, psychosocial, nutritional, spiritual, legal — related to cancer survivorship are met; that any early warning signs of recurrence are detected and treated immediately; and that routine preventive and follow-up care is always available to enhance your health, well-being and peace of mind.
