Dr. Segal’s lab is made up of both scientists and clinician-scientists.
Nick Almyroudis, MD
Dr. Almyroudis joined RPCI in the summer of 2004 after completing fellowships at the University of South Florida in Infectious Diseases and at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in Stem Cell Transplants. His research focuses on opportunistic infections in allogeneic hemopoietic stem cell transplant patients. Dr. Almyroudis is currently researching the epidemiology of VRE in oncology patients to determine modes of transmission, pathogenesis, and mortality rates due to particularly resistant strains. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Department of Medicine at RPCI, as well as an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences. His work in the lab primarily relates to host defense against aspergillosis.
Melissa Grimm, PhD
Dr. Grimm obtained her degree from SUNY at Buffalo while studying the role of temperature in modulating adaptive immune responses and is a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Segal’s lab. Since joining the lab in 2010, her research has involved defining the role of IL-17 in regulating immune cells in ovarian cancer. Her research also involves determining the role macrophage NADPH oxidase plays in controlling bacterial or fungal infections.
A. Nazmul H. Khan, MBBS, PhD
Dr. Khan obtained his medical degree while in Bangladesh and his PhD from SUNY at Buffalo. Prior to joining Segal’s lab as a scientist in 2011, he completed postdoctoral training in tumor immunology at the departments of Immunology and Molecular Medicine, RPCI. His research is focused on defining the role of NADPH oxidase in regulating immune cells (e.g. MDSCs) in ovarian tumor microenvironments and in modulating sensitivity to chemotherapy. He is also involved with identifying the role of NADPH oxidase and Dectin 1 in innate immune response.
Kelly Singel, BS
Kelly obtained her Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience and Anthropology at the University of Pittsburgh in 2011. Currently, she is a graduate student in the Interdisciplinary Master’s in Natural Science program through RPCI and SUNY at Buffalo. Her research in Dr. Segal’s lab is focused on characterizing the ovarian tumor microenvironment.
