Who is eligible for a blood or marrow transplant? Dr. McCarthy explains.

Understanding BMT

Allogeneic BMT uses blood or marrow provided by a donor.

Bone marrow is the soft material inside your bones where your blood cells are manufactured. Healthy bone marrow produces the red cells, white cells, and platelets that carry oxygen throughout your body, fight infection, and cause your blood to clot after an injury.

Timing is Critical

Deciding where and when to have your transplant is just as significant as deciding whether to have a transplant. Under many circumstances, there is a narrow window of opportunity to proceed. Delays may require you to get additional chemotherapy or may even preclude you from having a transplant altogether because of disease progression. It can take several weeks to find a suitable donor, line up caregivers, and prepare for the transplant. Once the Ontario Ministry of Health, in consultation with your physician, approves an Out-of-Country Transplant, your next focus should be on identifying a transplant center that meets your specific needs.
