Painters in the Park
Paint-Out Dates: September 22-23, 2012 (Rain or Shine)
Show and Sale: October 3, 2012
Paint-Out: Saturday, September 22, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, September 23, 10 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. on the RPCI campus, Elm & Carlton Sts. in Buffalo. Artist check in will be held in Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Research Studies Center (diagonally across the street from the hospital). The Research Studies Center will also serve as the Paint-Out headquarters that weekend and is where work can be left overnight. Artists need to bring their paper or canvas to registration so it can be stamped. Entry Deadline: Monday, September 17, 2012.
Artists Reception and Purchase Prize Selection (not open to the public): Sunday, September 23, 3:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m., in Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s Research Studies Center (diagonally across the street from the hospital).
Show and Sale of Art (open to the public): Wednesday, October 3, 2012, 11 a.m. - 2 p.m., in Kaminski Park on the RPCI campus. Artists are required to pick up any unsold art no later than 4:30 p.m. on Friday, October 5 in the Volunteer Office in Roswell Park’s lobby.
Parking: Painters in the Park artists and attendees who want to park in the RPCI parking garage should enter from Michigan Avenue.
Other campus events: Cruisin’ for a Cure, a car show/screening event is being held this same weekend at Roswell Park. It will take place Saturday, September 22, from 10 am to 4pm.

About the Paint-Out
On the weekend of September 22 and 23, 2012, Roswell Park Cancer Institute will hold an inaugural plein air (painting outdoors) event and will welcome approximately 25 local artists to our 28-acre campus. Artists will set up their easels, find inspirational subjects and start and complete their works of art over two days, rain or shine. Observing and engaging the artists as they create their works of art is encouraged and is free and open to the public.
“There is such beauty and lightness on the grounds all around the hospital and, from certain vantage points, you can see the Buffalo skyline and the lake in the distance,” said Dana Jenkins, RPCI’s Vice President of Performance Improvement and a member of the Art Committee. “It will be exciting to see what the artists choose to paint.”
The Alliance Foundation Art Committee is the inspiration behind Painters in the Park and three of the pieces created over the weekend will be selected to become part of the RPCI collection.
For Buffalo resident and accomplished contemporary artist Mark Taylor, participating in a plein air event is a first. He intends to create at least a couple of works of art during the two days including a large 11’ x 8.5’ oil painting on canvas.
“I am looking forward to spending time on the Roswell Park campus,” said Taylor. “I know a lot of people who have been touched by cancer so the weekend will have special meaning to me. I am not quite sure what I am going to be painting but that will be part of the fun and I will be switching between paintings to keep it interesting and fresh.”
The paint out will take place on Saturday, September 22, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sunday, September 23, from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. A show and sale of the paintings will take place on Wednesday, October 3, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., in conjunction with the Roswell Park Farmers Market in Kaminski Park. The paintings will be in a variety of mediums, subject matter and sizes. The sale is open to patients, staff members and the public and half of the proceeds will support the work of the Alliance Foundation Art Committee.
“Artwork contributes a great deal to the welcoming and therapeutic environment at RPCI,” said Jenkins. “Art can provide a distraction, start a conversation and give visitors interesting things to see, experience or think about. The selected pieces will be great additions to a collection that many artists have contributed to.”
Established in 2001, the Roswell Park Alliance Art Committee’s mission is to create a positive environment with works of art from Buffalo’s rich talent. The committee has been able to collect fine works of art through the generous support of the Cameron Baird Foundation and individual artists. Plein air painting began as a 19th-century style of painting outdoors that became a central feature of French Impressionism. It now describes painting done in the open air or with a strong sense of the open air.
