Goin’ Bald for Bucks to Honor Local Cancer Patients While Benefiting Life-Saving Research
Eighth-annual Roswell Park fundraiser kicks off spring campaign

Schools, businesses and organizations across Western New York are once again being asked to show their support for Roswell Park Cancer Institute’s patients through the 2009 “Goin’ Bald for Bucks” fundraising campaign. Participants collect pledges in return for shaving their heads or cutting off at least 10 inches of their hair to raise funds for cancer research and patient care programs. The campaign kicks off on Wednesday, March 4 in Roswell Park’s David C. Hohn, MD Lecture Hall, with RPCI’s own employees taking a turn in the barber’s chair. Dr. Philip McCarthy, Chief of the Division of Blood and Marrow Transplantation at Roswell Park, will emcee the event.
Lake Shore Senior High School history teacher Anthony George founded the Goin’ Bald for Bucks campaign as a tribute to his sister, Cathleen George, who lost her battle against cancer in March of 2004. Goin’ Bald for Bucks has since become a meaningful and favorite fundraiser among local schools and businesses, raising more than $500,000 over seven years.
“Goin’ Bald for Bucks raises critically needed funds for research to find cures,” said Dr. Judy Smith, Medical Director, Roswell Park. “It also helps our patients draw strength from those who are participating in their honor, and who are offering a visual show of support and solidarity to their cancer battles.”
Goin’ Bald events will be held at schools and organizations across Western New York in the coming months, including: Alden Central High School; Amherst High School; the Buffalo State College swim team; Canisius College; Erie & Niagara Insurance Association; Hamburg High School; Lake Shore Central School; Orchard Park High School; the Springville Griffith Institute; and Thomas Edison Elementary School.
