A testicular ultrasound is an imaging procedure that examines the testicles and other parts inside the scrotum. The ultrasound machine sends out high-frequency sound waves, which reflect off areas in the scrotum to create a picture.

Preparation

No special preparation is necessary for this test.

The Day of the Ultrasound

You will lie on your back with your legs spread. The health care provider will drape a cloth or apply wide strips of adhesive tape across your thighs under the scrotum. The scrotal sac will be slightly raised, with the testicles lying side by side.

A clear, water-based conducting gel is applied to the scrotal sac to help with the transmission of the sound waves. The ultrasound transducer (a handheld probe) is then moved over the scrotum.

There is little discomfort, though the conducting gel may feel slightly cold and wet.

Risks

There are no documented risks and there is no exposure to radiation involved.
