Here are some valuable sources of information and support in Western New York, including local chapters of national organizations.

Gilda’s Club of WNY

Gilda's Club provides a place where people whose lives have been touched by cancer can join with others for social and emotional support as a supplement to their medical care. Throughout the clubhouse, you find warm, soothing colors, comfortable furniture, and many windows. There are programs for adult men and women as well as Noogieland for children and a teen recreation room Free of charge and non-profit, Gilda's Club offers support and networking groups, lectures, workshops and social events. Cancer Wellness Center 

The Cancer Wellness Center is a wellness community for those touched by cancer offering services including patient education and emotional support. Their Cancer Coach Program provides support and encouragement to caner patients through trained volunteers who have recovered from a cancer diagnosis and want to share their experiences and success with others. Legal Services for Individuals and Families Affected by Cancer

Through a New York State Department of Health grant, Neighborhood Legal Services, Inc. is providing free legal services for low-income cancer patients, recent cancer survivors, and the families of pediatric cancer patients.  Help is available for wills, powers of attorney, family law, divorce, landlord /tenant law, Social Security Disability, S.S.I., public assistance, food stamps, Medicaid, utility shut offs, and numerous other legal matters. Clients not financially eligible may receive services on a sliding fee scale.  For more information, or to request services, call 716 847-0655 extension 420.

Hospice

Hospice Services are available to provide support and palliative care services to patients and caregivers coping with a life limiting illness. Call our department of Social Work at 716 845-8022 for information on Hospice services in your area.

American Cancer Society (ACS)

The ACS is dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem through research, education, advocacy and service.
Their local office in Amherst, NY, 716 689-6981, offers the following services to our patients:

  • Support Groups
  • Hope Lodge - Free housing for patients & families
  • Look Good/Feel Better – A monthly workshop for cancer patients with practical tips on skin, hair, nail and make-up.
  • Road to Recovery – Transportation for cancer patients

Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - Western & Central New York Chapter

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society offers a wide range of free educational and support programs for patients, their families, caregivers and healthcare professionals.   The local office is located at 4053 Maple Road, Suite 110, Amherst, NY  716 834-2578 or toll free 800-784-2368 Ext: 4667.
