Those who tuned in for this week’s Roswellness Radio program were in for a special treat: an appearance by Buffalo Sabres goalie Ryan Miller. The National Hockey League’s top goaltender was out of the net but in the studio for a show about RPCI’s psychosocial services — a cause that Ryan and his Steadfast Foundation have a personal connection to.

Miller, who received the National Hockey League’s NHL Foundation Player Award for 2010 in recognition of his extensive philanthropic activities, joined RPCI Medical Psychologists Megan Pailler, PhD, MA, and Jennifer Hydeman, PhD, for the program, which outlines various services offered to support the psychological and emotional well-being of RPCI patients and their families.

The Steadfast Foundation, the philanthropic organization Miller created to help children with leukemia, has provided funding toward psychosocial programs for children and their families served by Roswell Park through its support of Carly’s Club. “Through the Steadfast Foundation I am reaching out to make the public aware of our efforts to provide much needed support and resources to those suffering the ill-effects and life-altering consequences of cancer, especially all forms of childhood leukemia,” Miller says on the foundation’s website, http://www.thesteadfastfoundation.com.

Miller also earned the Vezina Trophy, awarded to the league’s top goaltender, this year. And last winter, he was named MVP of the 2010 Olympic hockey tournament. He will be awarded the General H. Norman Schwarzkopf Action Award from Roswell Park this November at our All Star Night gala.

Listen to the show online. Roswellness Radio airs every Sunday at 6:30 am on WBEN-AM Radio 970.
