Reasons For Growth

Expanded needs at Roswell Park are driven by three primary factors.

  • The risk of being diagnosed with cancer increases as individuals age.  Western New York’s aging population means that an increase in cancer patients is expected in the coming years.  In 2008, 14.5% of the WNY population was age 65 or older. This 65 + population in WNY is projected to increase to 16.7% by 2013.
  • The projected increase in the number of cancer patients is accompanied by a substantial anticipated shortage of community oncologists in our region.
  • As community knowledge of RPCI’s expertise and better clinical outcomes has increased, so has demand for our services. RPCI has quickly become the location of choice for professional and compassionate diagnosis and cancer treatment in Western New York.
