Clinical Genetics Service (Including Genetic Counseling)
Carolyn Farrell, MS, CNP, CGC, Director Forty-year-old Nancy knows the meaning of fear. Both her grandmother and mother were diagnosed with breast cancer before the age of 50. On one level, Nancy is concerned about her own future; on another, she is terrified that breast cancer may be a genetic "gift" she will pass on to her eight-year-old daughter. Nancy and her family are fictitious, but their profiles are all too familiar to the staff who are members of the Clinical Genetics Service. The Clinical Genetics Service at Roswell Park Cancer Institute was established to meet the needs of "high-risk" families. This program is a team effort of professionals from many specialties, who provide individuals and their families with a comprehensive, personalized cancer risk evaluation – based on the most timely, accurate information available – in a caring, confidential setting. Counseling includes educating about the biology and genetics of cancer, constructing a genetic pedigree, evaluating the risk for cancer, discussing and/or arranging genetic testing, addressing the social, ethical and legal issues of genetic testing, and reinforcing appropriate screening measures, testing and referrals. How to Schedule an Appointment Persons can be referred to the Clinical Genetics Service by physicians, allied healthcare professionals, area agencies or by self-referral. For referral inquiries or more information, please call our Cancer Information Program at 1-877-ASK-RPCI (1-877-275-7724). An information specialist will complete a brief genetics questionnaire with you over the phone and we will contact you about a consultation. Educational Activities The Clinical Genetics Service professionals are dedicated to education and advocacy. Seminars and talks are presented to healthcare professionals, community agencies and businesses, lay groups, students, and teachers on all aspects and issues associated with cancer and genetics. Knowledge and understanding are the keys to good health care and individual empowerment. Dissemination of accurate information and how to access resources are beginning steps. |
