Dr. Robert A. Fenstermaker joined the medical staff of Roswell Park Cancer Institute (RPCI) in 1995, became Chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery in 1997, and was appointed Co-Director of the Gamma Knife Center when it opened in 1998. He earned his medical degree at the Northeastern Ohio Universities College of Medicine in 1981. Following residency training in neurological surgery at University Hospitals of Cleveland, he completed research fellowships in Pharmacology and Biochemistry in 1989 at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in Cleveland, Ohio.
Dr. Fenstermaker is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons and was certified by the American Board of Neurological Surgery in 1991. He is a Professor of Neurosurgery and Oncology at the University at Buffalo School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences and has served as the Director of Neurosurgical Oncology in the Department of Neurosurgery at University at Buffalo sine 1995. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Congress of Neurological Surgeons, American College of Surgeons, American Association for Cancer Research, Society for Neuro-Oncology, Pituitary Society and the Leksell Gamma Knife Society.
Dr. Fenstermaker specializes in the surgical treatment of patients with tumors of the brain and pituitary gland. His very active clinical neurosurgical practice involves the use of intraoperative MRI (iMRI) and endoscopic skull base and pituitary surgery. In addition, he treats patients with brain tumors, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and trigeminal neuralgia (tic douloureaux) using Gamma Knife radiosurgery. His scientific research focuses on studying immunotherapy for the treatment of malignant brain tumors. He has been a contributing author on more than 160 journal articles, book chapters and abstracts. He has been a reviewer for leading cancer and neurosurgical journals and has presented his research at many national and international meetings.
