Our Stories - Betty Green

I am proud to say to say that I am a colon cancer survivor.

Before I was diagnosed with having colon cancer, I didn’t know thateven though colorectal cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable types of cancer, it is still the third-leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 50,000 deaths each year.

I wasn’t aware that being African-American and over the age of 50 were two of the biggest factors that put me at an increased risk for colon cancer.

Now I know….and now YOU know too!

Roswell Park has a Colorectal High-Risk Clinic to help people like you and I. I tell my friends not to be afraid in getting early detection screenings. Since 2010, the Office of Cancer Health Disparities has been offering free colorectal cancer awareness presentations. Knowledge is power!
