Integrated Radiation Therapy Systems

Roswell Park's Radiation Medicine Department features three treatment vaults that house the Trilogy and TrueBeam systems. These fully integrated radiation therapy systems deliver unmatched precise, high-dose radiation therapy. It can be used to deliver all forms of external-beam radiation therapy, including 3-Dimensional Conformal Radiation Therapy (3D-CRT), Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT), Image-guided Radiation Therapy, Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT) or Stereotactic Radiosurgery.

The system features an advanced medical linear accelerator that rotates 360 degrees around the patient to deliver radiotherapy treatments from many angles, an imaging system to pinpoint the size and location of a patient’s tumor moments before each treatment and respiratory gating to automatically synchronize the radiation beam to the patient’s breathing.

Physicians can deliver higher doses of radiation to the target and the optimal number of beams to the tumor site with submillimeter accuracy, and with significantly less radiation exposure to normal tissue. Patients experience greater comfort during the outpatient procedure, shorter treatment times, fewer side effects and have the potential for better outcomes.

These systems treat a wide range of cancers including breast, head and neck, liver, lung, pancreatic and prostate and offer special positioning and gating features to safely treat tumors close to critical structures such as the spinal cord.
