Trilogy System
The jewels of the department are two Varian Trilogy systems. Produced by Varian Medical Systems, this fully integrated image-guided radiation therapy (IGRT) technology delivers unmatched precise, high-dose radiation therapy to tumors. It can be used to deliver all forms of external- beam radiation therapy, including three-dimensional radiation therapy, intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT), stereotactic body radiation therapy (SBRT) or stereotactic radiosurgery. RPCI’s Triology System is state-of-the-art and the only machine of its kind in Western New York.
Triology™ technology can be used to deliver all forms of external-beam radiation therapy including three-dimensional radiation therapy, intensity modulated radiation therapy, stereotactic body radiation therapy or stereotactic radiosurgery.
The system features an advanced medical linear accelerator that rotates 360 degrees around the patient to deliver radiotherapy treatments from many angles, an imaging system to pinpoint the size and location of a patient’s tumor moments before each treatment and “respiratory gating” to automatically synchronize the radiation beam to the patient’s breathing.
Physicians can deliver higher doses of radiation to the target and the optimal number of beams to the tumor site with submillimeter accuracy, and with significantly less radiation exposure to normal tissue. Patients experience greater comfort during the outpatient procedure, shorter treatment times, fewer side effects and have the potential for better outcomes.
The Trilogy™ System can be used to treat a wide range of cancers including breast, head and neck, liver, lung, pancreatic and prostate. The system can also be used to target tumors that are close to critical structures such as the spinal cord.
